Bungie Is Sunsetting Destiny 2. Final Update Hits June 9!

by Misty White and Vicky Stewart-Ferguson

Guardians… this is the moment we all knew would come, but not like this.

Multiple reports now confirm that Bungie is ending active development on Destiny 2, delivering one last major update on June 9th before shifting the studio’s full power toward their extraction shooter Marathon.

Yep! Destiny 2 — the game that carried an entire generation of looter shooter fans — is finally being put to rest. June 9th is shaping up to be the final meaningful Destiny 2 update. After that, the game enters maintenance mode — no more seasonal content, no more expansions. Bungie is reportedly reallocating teams to Marathon, their big 2026 comeback play. Internal sources say the studio wants “all hands-on deck” to ensure Marathon remains dev team strong.

Destiny 2 has been running since 2017, surviving Two engine overhauls, a free to play transition, sunsetting controversies, the Light & Darkness saga, and more community revivals than we can count. But with Marathon needing a massive push — and Bungie under pressure after layoffs and delays — the studio is making the hard pivot.

So, what does this mean for Guardians? Well, the Tower isn’t shutting down, but don’t expect new content. Live events and limited time modes may rotate, but that’s it, and Destiny 2 becomes a legacy title while Bungie bets the future on Marathon.

With Bungie going all in, Marathon is positioned as their next flagship shooter which brings to players a competitive extraction style PvPvE experience. It’s also a full rebuild of Bungie’s identity post Destiny, meaning the studio is treating this pivot like a relaunch of its brand.

Our take? Destiny 2’s sunsetting marks the end of one of gaming’s most iconic live service runs. But it also signals Bungie’s attempt at a rebirth — and Marathon is the spearhead. So Guardians… enjoy these last weeks. It's the end of the Destiny era, and the beginning of one with Marathon written all over it.
