SEGA is returning to its Roots!

by L.W. and Ann Marie Barker

Sega is moving away from large-scale, long-term live service “Super Game” plans and focusing instead on new, high-quality titles built around its classic franchises. The strategy favors complete game experiences that bring iconic characters to modern platforms rather than depending primarily on service-based models.

The company is scaling back its “Super Game” ambitions, which were centered on creating massive, persistent online titles. Instead, Sega is investing in reboots and new installments of established series, aiming to appeal to both long-time fans and new audiences. It also remains strong as a third-party publisher across Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo.

Although some earlier digital efforts, such as Sega Forever, were ended or reduced by late 2023, Sega’s current priority is strengthening the value of its core franchises.

Our take? It feels like the start of a new golden era with Sega doubling down on what made them iconic in the first place. So no battle passes, and no “forever game” grind, but more Jet Set Radio, more Crazy Taxi, more Shinobi, more Golden Axe—not as nostalgia throwbacks either, but as modern, fully rebuilt experiences! Just pure, stylish Sega energy across Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC.
