In a major strategic pivot, on April 23, 2026, newly appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that the "Microsoft Gaming" division is being rebranded to simply Xbox. This move is part of a broader "Return of Xbox" initiative aimed at restoring the brand's core gaming identity.
The "This is an Xbox" campaign was discontinued because it focused on Xbox as a general platform rather than a dedicated gaming console. Sharma has explicitly ruled out "low-quality AI content," emphasizing that games should remain "art crafted by humans".
The title "Microsoft Gaming", first used in 2022 during the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, has now been retired to create a clearer brand across consoles, PC, and cloud services. Along with the rebrand, Xbox revealed a bold neon green, glass-like logo inspired by its 2001 and Xbox 360 roots, replacing the old minimalist white look. Sharma explained that while the previous name described the organization's structure, it didn’t capture the team’s ambitions. The company has now adopted a new motto: "We Are Xbox."
Also, in a surprising turn, Xbox has lowered its monthly subscription fees after an internal admission that the service had become "too expensive for players". However, this reduction comes with modifications to how first-party games are released. Starting April 21, 2026, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 per month, and PC Game Pass decreased from $16.49 to $13.99. However, future Call of Duty titles will no longer launch "Day One" on Game Pass. Instead, they will be added approximately one year later, typically during the following holiday season.
Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty shared that the company is reconsidering its stance on game exclusivity. While no immediate plans were revealed, they noted that future decisions about releasing first-party titles on other platforms like PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2 would be "strategic and data-driven."
Our take? This is a full scale identity reset — a return to the Xbox that built a generation of fans. A return to green. A return to clarity. A return to gaming. The Return of Xbox has begun!
